Description
Rubio Monocoat Fumed – Reactive Precolor
This is the reactive precolor we reach for when we want an authentic, aged grey look on tannin-rich woods—without stains or pigments muddying the grain.
Rubio Monocoat Fumed is a reactive precolor designed specifically for tannic woods like oak. Instead of coating the surface, it chemically reacts with the natural tannins in the wood to create a soft grey, fumed, time-worn effect. Color variation is expected—and desired—because the reaction strength depends on the tannin content of each board.
⚠️ This is a pretreatment only and must be followed by Rubio Monocoat Oil Plus 2C.

Dustin’s Notes
Fumed is all about chemistry and expectations. Oak with higher tannins will go darker; lower-tannin boards stay lighter. That variation is the beauty of it—but you need to explain that upfront. Always sample first, and remember this is not a finish. Rubio Oil Plus 2C is what locks everything in.
